Ainsworth Game Technology: cabinets, link progressives, and a takeover that failed

Ainsworth was founded in 1995 by Len Ainsworth — the man who also founded Aristocrat. It builds gaming machines rather than just content, and in February 2026 Novomatic’s attempt to take it private fell short.

Who Ainsworth are

Ainsworth Game Technology was founded in 1995 by Len Ainsworth and is headquartered in Newington, Sydney. It is publicly listed on the ASX as AGI. Len Ainsworth had previously founded Aristocrat — so two of the largest names on an Australian casino floor trace to the same person.

A correction worth making, because plenty of copy written before February 2026 has it wrong: Novomatic does not own Ainsworth. Novomatic made an unconditional, board-recommended takeover offer at A$1.00 per share in August 2025, holding 52.9% at the time. Its stake reached 66.59% by January 2026, short of the 75% needed to take the company private. The offer closed on 6 February 2026 and the transaction deed was terminated on 11 February. Members of the Ainsworth family had indicated they would not support it.

What Ainsworth produces is primarily land-based: gaming machines, standalone and linked progressives, covering design, development, assembly, testing, sales and field service. It also runs an Interactive division, one of five business segments alongside APAC, North America, Latin America and Europe.

A practical note: ainsworth.com.au now redirects to agtslots.com, which is the live corporate site.

Ainsworth cabinets

Ainsworth publishes its cabinet generations rather than individual game titles, which tells you where the company thinks its value is.

No RTP figures are quoted — land-based returns are set per jurisdiction and denomination. Ainsworth does not publish individual game titles or a catalogue total on its corporate site, so this table lists the hardware it does publish.

What makes it different

Hardware generations and linked jackpots

Ainsworth differentiates on cabinet form factor rather than on branded software mechanics — and it does not pretend otherwise.

Linked and standalone progressives

Named on the About page as a core product category alongside the base machines. Link games pool jackpot contributions across banks of machines on a venue floor, so the prize is fed by every unit in the bank. It requires regulator-approved central determination, which is a real barrier to entry.

Full-stack manufacturing

Design, development, assembly, testing, sales and field service in one company. Very few suppliers own the whole chain, and it is why Ainsworth is a manufacturer rather than a content studio.

No branded software mechanic

Worth saying plainly: Ainsworth publishes no named reel mechanic on its corporate site. Any profile listing four Ainsworth mechanics has invented them.

Where it runs

Where Ainsworth operates

Australasia, Europe, North America and Latin America, described as a global company with offices around the world. Five segments: APAC, North America, Latin America, Europe and Interactive.

The company claims over 275 current licences globally but publishes no jurisdiction names and no numbers. For a manufacturer of this size that is a licence count rather than a licence register.

No operator or aggregator partners are named on the corporate site.

Licences and certifications
  • Over 275 current licences claimed — no jurisdictions named, no numbers published
  • For a land-based manufacturer, approvals run through machine-type certification per jurisdiction
  • No online-specific licence detail is published for the Interactive division
  • Request documentation for your market rather than relying on the headline count
  • Note that any pre-February 2026 profile describing Ainsworth as Novomatic-owned is out of date
