Africa is the fastest-growing region in iGaming — young, mobile-first and football-mad. But it isn’t one market: Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Tanzania and South Africa each regulate separately, and online verticals differ by country. Mobile money is the backbone, and sports betting is the gateway product. Our platform is built to run across these markets from one system.

Africa rewards mobile-first, localised operators

Africa’s growth is driven by a young population, rising smartphone penetration and an enormous appetite for football betting. Crash games like Aviator are also exceptionally popular across the continent. The operators winning here build for mobile money, low data usage and local languages first.

The catch is fragmentation: each country has its own regulator, taxes and rules, and what’s permitted varies — sports betting is widely legal, while online casino is restricted in some markets. A platform that handles per-market configuration and mobile-money payments out of the box is the difference between scaling and stalling.

How African markets work

Many markets, many regulators

There is no single African licence. Nigeria is regulated at federal and state level (with state lotteries/boards such as Lagos’s LSLGA); Kenya by the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB); Ghana by the Gaming Commission; Tanzania by the Gaming Board; South Africa by the National Gambling Board and provincial regulators.

What’s permitted varies

Sports betting is legal and hugely popular across most major markets. Online casino is permitted in some and restricted in others — notably South Africa, where online casino is currently prohibited while sports betting is licensed provincially. Always confirm per market.

Payments & tax

Mobile money (M-Pesa, MTN MoMo and similar) is the dominant payment rail; card penetration is low. Betting taxes and excise vary widely by country and change often, so model each market individually.
