Canada regulates iGaming province by province, and the map is opening fast. Ontario launched a competitive, open regulated market in April 2022 under the AGCO and iGaming Ontario; Alberta is launching its own open market in 2026; other provinces run through their lottery corporations. Single-event sports betting has been legal nationwide since 2021. Our platform is built to enter each province on its own terms.
Canada rewards operators ready for regulated provinces
Canada is a high-value, English- and French-speaking market with strong sports and casino demand. Ontario proved the model: an open, competitive regulated market that dozens of operators entered from day one. Alberta is following in 2026 with a similar AGCO/Ontario-style framework.
The nuance is that there’s no single national licence — each province sets its own rules, and outside the open markets, play runs through provincial lottery monopolies. A platform that can enter Ontario now, Alberta on launch, and others as they open is what scales here.
How the Canadian market works
Provincial, not federal
Online gambling is regulated provincially. Ontario runs an open competitive market via the AGCO and iGaming Ontario (iGO). Alberta is launching an open market in 2026 (Alberta iGaming Corporation with the AGLC). British Columbia (BCLC/PlayNow) and Quebec (Loto-Québec) operate provincial monopolies.
Sports betting
Single-event sports betting was legalised nationwide in 2021, and is offered through provincial frameworks — a major driver of regulated growth.
Compliance
Open markets like Ontario require registration, certified games, KYC/AML, responsible-gambling controls and detailed regulator reporting — configurable per province in our platform.
