76 of 100 markets peak in August — and most sportsbooks miss it

Seasonality data published in late August put a number on something sportsbook operators feel every year: 76 of 100 tracked countries peak in August, and August demand runs roughly ten times June’s. The uncomfortable part is the second finding — the brands with the biggest year-round share are not the ones that capture the spike.

The numbers

  • Of 100 countries tracked, 76 hit their annual peak in August, on the European football restart.
  • August demand is about ten times June, the quietest month of the calendar.
  • Fantasy demand grew 3% year on year — roughly four times faster than other iGaming categories.
  • Sky Bet averaged a 25% month-on-month jump from July to August across the 2023, 2024 and 2025 kickoffs; bet365 around 19%; William Hill under 6%.
  • A separate study published 27 August found gambling branding occupied 32.4% of Premier League highlights screen time, against 1.5% at the World Cup.

The peak is predictable. The share of it is not.

None of the seasonality is surprising in direction. Europe’s domestic leagues restart in the second half of August, fantasy leagues lock in the same week, and acquisition costs and volumes move together. What the brand-level data adds is that the same calendar event produces wildly different outcomes for operators of similar size.

Sky Bet, with a smaller overall footprint than the market leaders, posts the largest July-to-August lift — just under 25% on a three-year average. bet365 follows at roughly 19% despite holding around 13% brand share alongside William Hill. William Hill, on comparable volume, moves less than 6%. Dominant year-round share, in other words, does not convert automatically into a share of the August surge.

That gap is a product and readiness story rather than a marketing-spend one. The brands that spike are the ones whose fantasy, accumulator and league-specific markets are live and merchandised on day one of the season, not the ones that get there in week three.

Why the 32.4% figure matters alongside it

The screen-time study makes the same point from the other direction. Gambling branding filled 32.4% of Premier League highlights screen time in the sample, compared with 1.5% at the World Cup — a saturation level that tells you exactly how contested attention is in those weeks. Everyone is buying the same eyeballs at the same time. The differentiator is what happens after the click.

If a new customer lands on a sportsbook that has the fixture but not the player props, or has the props but no live cash-out, or has both but a nine-field registration flow, the August traffic converts to somebody else’s deposit. The season does not wait for a release cycle.

Readiness is an architecture question

Twelve months of run-up ends in a fortnight where product gaps become revenue gaps. Practically, being ready for the peak means four things are already true before the first whistle: the market coverage for the domestic league is complete down to the lower tiers; bet builder, accumulators and cash-out are live rather than roadmapped; casino cross-sell is wired into the betting session so the deposit works twice; and the platform can absorb a ten-fold traffic swing without hand-holding.

That last point is why operators increasingly buy the stack rather than build it. A turnkey sportsbook arrives with feed, trading, markets and risk management already in production, which moves the launch question from “can we build it by August” to “which August”. The cross-sell half of it is served by the same platform: a casino game aggregator behind the sportsbook means the customer acquired on football has somewhere to go on a Tuesday night in January.

The window is already closing for 2027

The honest read of a ten-times seasonality curve is that a sportsbook launched in October is a sportsbook that has missed a year. Operators looking at 2027 — whether that means a new market, a second brand or a first sportsbook alongside an existing casino — are working to a deadline in July, not August. Integration, certification and trading setup take the months in between.

For a step-by-step version of that timeline, our guide on how to launch a sportsbook breaks the work into the sequence that actually fits a season.
